On Tuesday we decided to go to an area called Bygdøy, which I lovingly refer to as Big Boy. It took us a while to figure it out but once we found the Ferry named Bygdøyfaergerne we were on our way. It only took about 10 minutes to reach this amazing little area of South Oslo. We were so lucky to have such fantastic weather while we were in Bygdøy since the majority of what we did was outside. We walked through an amazing residential neighborhood to get to the Norsk Folkemuseum or Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. I still can't figure out what style I like more when it comes to the houses, but I pretty much fall in love with every white house with a shiny black roof that I see. Once at the museum I was excited becuase I am also a little obsessed with the Sami culure in Norway and there was a Sami exhibit. So we of course had to check it out followed by an exhibit of old toys! We decided to walk around the grounds of the Museum where they had almost 200 buildings set up from around all of Norway dating as far back as the 13 century. The property where the open-air museum was was amazing, filled with trees and rocks, hills and paths for everyone to explore. Jeremy did not warn me about all of the 'hiking' around we would be doing and you would think red patent leather open toe shoes would not cut it but they were really quite comfortable, what was not cool about wearing open toed shoes was when I noticed that up in the hills there were GIANT ants! These ants were everywhere!! Jeremy thought it was hilarious, I was scared! I ran in place and up and down the hills becuase I thought that if I stood still they would sneek into my shoes and eat my toes! They were that scary. After exploring the outdoors we headed to the museum cafe. We split a calzone and an open faced sandwich, smørbrøde, with shrimp! YUM. We ended up spending the rest of the cash that we had on our lunch becuase for some reason our cards were not working. The guy at the cafe said there were no ATMs around...so we walked a few blocks up the road to the Viking Ship Museum, Vikinskipshuset and asked the kid at the ticketbooth if he knew of an ATM, he said ya, there is a bank by the Norsk Folkemuseum where we just were but that it closes in 15 minutes...I looked at our shoes, and thought, although they were comfy the red shoes were not running shoes, so I pushed Jeremy out the door of the Viking Ship Museum and said GO GET CASH! If we didn't we would have to walk or take a very expensive cab ride back to our hotel. Jeremy ran back to the Norsk Museum, found the ATM but it would not take his card so he asked the ticketer at the Museum if she would do a little cash back deal with him and luckily she said yes. Hooray for Oslo! The Viking Ship Museum was pretty amazing. There are only 3 Vikingships on display but they are incredible. The ships were originally from 800AD!!! They were burial ships so they had a ton of the burial gifts on display as well, it was pretty amazing.
After visiting the 2 museums in Bygdøy we decided to head back to Central Oslo. It was a beautiful day, we sat on the pier waiting for the ferry while I eavesdropped on some French girls and read my Speak Norwegian in 10 Minutes a Day book that I bought at the Museum gift shop! FUN! We did our usual, came back to the hotel, nap and then vanture out again for dinner. We walked up and down Karl Johans Gate to try to find the best place to eat for the best price. We ended up at Jambo, a Chinese/Norwegian restaurant on the 2nd floor of an old building overlooking Karl Johans Gate. For NOK 500 we got a spring roll and salad, garlic pepper chicken, sweet and sour type beef dish, white rice, fried rice and the most amazing deep fried banana and vanilla ice cream, oh and a beer and a glass of wine! Fabulous! Again, another great day in Norway!!
